What with Mardi Gras coming up we thought it would be fun to chat with a promoter from Sydney, so we called our old mate Johan Khoury, man behind ‘Daywash’ and now ‘Nevermind Club’. Johan tells us about Kylie, Sydney and Circuit boys.
So let’s cut to the chase, Kylie?
OMG she is HUGE icon for Mardi Gras and possibly the biggest reason for mass ticket sales to the mardi gras party from word on the street.
In general though, how is Mardi Gras 2012 looking?
From the buzz around, its looking like its shaping up to be one of our biggest ones yet.
Will you be holding any events around MG?
An easier question would be, am I planning to get any sleep over the Mardi Gras period. I run the Phoenix Dayclub over three days, Nevermind Nightclub over four days, a day party called Daywash which is massively popular and nearly sold out, and two mens parties called Scruff and Big Love Muscle. (exhausted thinking about them but excited too)
Back to you, how did you start promoting?
I was a party boy that used to travel the world to experience the big parties, the term I was called was a ‘Circuit Boy’, travelling the circuit. And when I returned I was fascinated how Sydney be influenced by some of my international experiences. I went to New York Pride, London Pride, Love Parade, Ibiza Closing Party, Mykonos Closing Party, Miami White Party, San Francisco Pride and Mardi Gras was on that list too.
First Daywash event?
Daywash started only three years ago but now has landed its place as a favourite across Australia and New Zealand too. It’s a fun day party across multiple dance spaces indoor and outdoor which caters to a diverse genre of music from pop, to tech, to deep house, to disco etc thoughout its rooms. Typically we have about 20 DJs local and international at each party and the shows and entertainment are random and rarely advertised capturing that element of surprise. What makes your events special?
Because I have a passion for a fun night or day out. Too many promoters look at just profit, where as for me, its all about the punters experience.
A little birdie tells us you’re opening your own club?
Good news travels fast (thanks to the internet no doubt), yes I am excited to report that I have an interest in one of our most popular clubs on Oxford St Sydney called Nevermind. It’s a place where Danny Teneglia played and tuned in the sound system, Lady Gaga performed here, George Michael, Snoop Dogg, Spice Girl Mel B, and Luciana have made their appearance too. The list goes on and on. I love the place.
If you could book any artist (alive or dead) to play ‘Nevermind Club’ who would it be?
Can I get a repeat of the Madonna Superbowl pls.
Describe ‘Nevermind Club’ in three tracks?
Three lines from tracks I would refer Nevermind to would be: Fade Into Darkness, We Found A Love In A Hopeless Place, Soul Heaven
