This month in promoters corner we quiz Paul Crane from Kinky Malinki
When did you start promoting? I started doing some local events in South London, building up the normal way from small acorns and all that jazz and that was over 12 years ago now so promoting has actually taken up over two thirds of my actual life on this planet.
When and where did you do your first KM? It was just after the Second World War. OK, that’s a slight fib; it was nearly 10 years ago at a place called Imperial Gardens over in South London. We had quite an ambitious line up that even included Joey Negro.
How’s Ibiza going? We kick off on the 26th June, so a little later than some of the other promotions, but everything is in place and we are looking forward to another year on the island and getting back to El Divino, which I feel is a truly beautiful club that is very well suited to Kinky Malinki and what we do.
How’s it going at the Scala? It is still very early days for us as we’ve only held the one party. If we are to judge things from that party then things are looking quite promising and hopefully Scala will soon start to be a natural clubbing destination for house music lovers in London.
Big tunes at your club this summer? I’m obviously going to go for some shameless self-promotion and stick my neck on the line for our new forthcoming tracks on the Kinky Malinki Recordings label. One is a piano led stormer, similar in vibe to Eric Prydz’s ‘Pjanoo’, which is called ‘Long Verb’ by Greg Stainer and comes with some wicked remixes by Those Usual Suspects and Kid Massive. The other track is sing-a-long number that has already got some love from a certain Pete Tong and is called ‘I Love Linda’ by Sleek Physique.
General vibe on clubland at the moment? There seems to be a general consensus that there is a grey cloud hovering over clubland for one reason or the other and this probably is an extension to the economic situation in the UK but it’s not all doom and gloom and life really is what you make it, therefore so is clubland!!
